£1million rail station refurbishment: Pictures show work in progress

Pictures show the progress of work on the £1million renovation to the entrance to Weymouth station.

The area in front of King Street station has become a fenced off construction site with workers driving machinery digging up the area at the roundabout.

The Weymouth Gateway project promises to provide a more attractive and safer station environment, bringing benefits to the community, businesses and all station users.

The work – coordinated by the Dorset Coast Forum with support from various other organizations – is being carried out in phases to minimize disruption.

The first phase which included the station car park, below, is now complete.

Phase two work involving the main station forecourt is underway – this is where the new central pedestrian area and ‘vehicle transit route’ will be built.

This is the area, according to Steven Booth, Dorset Coast Forum project manager, that will make a “real difference with more attractive and welcoming design and creative planting”.

Major infrastructure and revetment works are expected to be completed by the end of March 2022.

Mr Booth said: “The more integrated transport links being installed should be beneficial for all, particularly the new bus stops on the forecourt and King Street itself.

“We are still looking to start construction on Pocket Park in late January, which is intended to become a heritage railroad park.”

He added: “Work on the information panels is also progressing and we have prepared a brief to solicit expressions of interest to undertake this work. Contacts have been made with local history organizations to seek information on railway heritage and we have received good responses. We will work with our partners to determine what options are available and acceptable before making decisions on the final design and implementation.

“If you would like to add your thoughts and ideas to the new information boards planned for Weymouth station, please contact us.”

Mr Booth said the original stone sculpture in the center of the roundabout installed when the station was rebuilt in the 1980s is going to be put in storage pending a decision as to what to do with it, as it does not not part of the new design.
