The tech giant’s latest patent filing suggests that Apple is working on game controllers that could connect to its mobile devices, such as the iPad and iPhone, as well as its Macs.

Apple game controller patent

According to a report by 9to5Mac, the iPhone maker recently filed patents for game controller designs, suggesting that Apple plans to release gaming accessories for its devices.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the European Patent Office (EPO) have already approved the Cupertino-based tech giant’s game controller designs.

It turns out that the EPO first released Apple’s concept game controller two weeks ago, or March 31, to be more precise. Apple may have tried the patent first in Europe because there are fewer steps in the continent’s patent process.

On the other hand, the USPTO followed suit and released a similar filing on April 10.

Interestingly, Apple’s published patents showed a total of three game controller concepts.

That said, 9to5Mac proposed in the same report that the latest patent could likely suggest that Apple is still experimenting with the gaming accessory.

The filings included several concepts as if the tech giant is still deciding its direction. It would be exciting to see the final product that Apple shows us fans.

One of the concepts proposed by Apple’s engineering team shows a mobile gaming accessory that looks a lot like the familiar Joy-Con from the popular gaming console, the Nintendo Switch.

However, unlike the Switch accessory, Apple’s version allows its users to attach it to the sides of an iPad or iPhone in landscape or portrait mode. Fans weren’t expecting the controller to be applicable to the iPad, so it’s definitely a nice surprise.

Meanwhile, besides the Joy-Con-like concept, the Cupertino giant has offered another version of the controller, in which it is attached to iPhones in the form of a foldable case.

According to a recent report by WCCFTech.

Its design takes a more conventional approach – similar to controllers these days. To be exact, the gaming accessory sports a traditional joystick design that connects to Apple devices via Bluetooth.
