Caltrans Projects Will Require New Policy To Make Rides SaferCaltrans Projects To Require New Policy To Make Rides Safer – Hometown Station | KHTS FM 98.1 & AM 1220 – Radio Santa Clarita

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) on Monday announced its new policy for all new transportation projects it funds or oversees to include “full street” features that provide safe and accessible options for all modes of transportation.

The policy aims to expand the availability of sustainable transportation options to help meet the state’s climate, health and equity goals, officials say.

“California needs to reduce dependence on driving without sacrificing mobility and accessibility,” said Caltrans director Toks Omishakin. “As Caltrans and local transportation agencies prepare for the influx of new federal funding for infrastructure, it is important that we provide safe, convenient, sustainable and accessible alternatives to driving to meet our climate goals while serving all Californians fairly. ”

A full street provides mobility for people of all ages and abilities, especially those who walk, cycle, use mobility aids and use public transportation, officials said.

Complete streets offer several benefits, including improving safety and creating more sustainable transportation options to reduce dependence on driving and improve public health by encouraging active transportation like walking and cycling, according to the reports. responsible.

As part of the new policy, Caltrans is committed to removing administrative barriers and partnering with communities and local agencies to ensure that more projects on national and local transport systems improve connectivity to pedestrians, bikes and transit facilities, as well as accessibility to destinations, officials said.

If not appropriate for the project context or community, projects must receive approval from Caltrans before complete streets features are ruled out, officials say.
