Companies Wanted for Purple Heart Parking Project

ELM GROVE, W.Va. (WTRF) – Are you an area business looking to become more veteran friendly?

VFW Post 4442 in Elm Grove is looking for businesses to be part of its Purple Heart parking lot project.

All they ask is that you reserve a spot for veterans injured in action.

We have a few WWII vets, but mostly Vietnam and our young vets coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan. Lots of Purple Heart recipients because of injuries. They literally took a bullet for us, or an IDE, or lost a leg or an arm and I think we owe them something.

Wally McMasters, Commander Elect, VFW Post 4442

The post will provide the sign and even a pole to place it if you don’t have one.

The post’s elected commander, Wally McMasters, said he got the idea when he saw an older veteran parked in a no-parking zone at a local business. McMasters recalled that the vehicle had a Purple Heart license plate, he could tell the veteran was struggling to move.

I approached the gentleman and said ‘sir, why don’t you park in the handicapped place?’. He said, ‘well, I don’t really have a disabled sticker and there’s no ‘disabled room’.

That’s when McMasters knew it had to do something to fix the problem.

This man literally took a bullet for us and he deserves better.

McMasters says they would specifically like these to be placed in businesses with larger parking lots and as close to the entrance as possible. He also asks that these be available at businesses that cater to veterans or in places that veterans visit frequently.

Extension 4442 will also notify Purple Heart recipients in the area which businesses have parking spaces and are easier to get to.

Several companies have already registered to participate. McMasters said they have about 20 panels, but would gladly buy more if needed.
