With Russian President Vladimir Putin solely responsible for the war in Ukraine, all parties need to be realistic about what a workable endgame might look like. If the path of negotiation is open, a peace settlement should reconcile several imperatives.

WASHINGTON, DC – A new Guernica is being painted before our eyes – and this bloody web is the work of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is determined to reduce Ukraine to rubble. The barbaric Russian invasion violently betrayed the civilizational values ​​that Putin claimed to espouse in his tendentious lectures on the alleged centuries-old unity of Russians, Ukrainians and Belarusians.

Putin’s actions are reminiscent of the worst looters in world history and shame the “Russian idea” he claims to champion. The ancient Ukrainian city of Kiev – like Jerusalem – is a sacred multicultural site that should be protected, not desecrated, by anyone who truly cares about Orthodoxy or what is great and beautiful in civilization human.

I have been skeptical of the continued enlargement of NATO. But Putin’s unprovoked war of aggression against a country that has done nothing to threaten Russia’s security is utterly unwarranted and grotesquely out of proportion to any possible Russian grievance of being kicked out of Western clubs.
