PRIMAVERA DO LESTE, Brazil, November 17, 2021 / PRNewswire / – FS, a Market Leader in the Production of Low Carbon Biofuels and Animal Nutrition, Announces Expansion into Mato Grosso and the construction of its third plant, located in Primavera do Leste, MT.
The plant, located in Primavera do Leste, will have an investment of 2.3 billion reais (US $ 420 million) generating around 8,000 indirect jobs during the construction phase and 500 direct and indirect jobs during its operation. Site preparation has already started, with commissioning scheduled for 2023 with a planned capacity of over 150 million gallons of ethanol per year.
“Primavera do Leste is a very important region for FS because of its large corn supply and its strategic location for the distribution of our products”, says FS CEO, Rafael Abud, which adds: “Like our other existing sites, no fossil fuels will be used in the production process, which will set the global benchmark for the production of low-carbon biofuels.”
Today, with two of the country’s largest ethanol plants using corn as a feedstock, at Lucas do Rio verde and Sorriso / MT, FS already has a production capacity of over 375 million gallons per year and, with the inauguration of the Primavera do Leste plant, the company is expected to become one of the three largest producers of ‘ethanol in Brazil, reaching a production capacity of 525 million gallons per year. With the full investment plan, which includes three more factories by 2026 also in the state, FS would achieve a production capacity of 1.3 billion gallons of ethanol per year.
In 2020 FS obtained certification to be part of RenovaBio and issue decarbonization credits (CBIO) and in 2021 made six long-term commitments to the company (Sustainability Commitment FS 2030). These commitments have objectives correlated with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and consistent with the Paris Agreement.
The company currently has the highest energy and environmental efficiency (NEEA) score for anhydrous ethanol in the country. In addition, FS is also the only certified corn ethanol producer to disclose primary data, including full traceability of agricultural emissions from grain suppliers and adhering to the Climate Bonds Initiative, according to the Sustainalytics assessment.
Additionally, in 2021 FS announced the implementation of from Brazil first BECCS (Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage) project. FS’s BECCS project, located in Lucas do Rio verde plant, made significant progress throughout the year, including hiring Schlumberger as a key partner for geological and injection studies. After the implementation of this project, FS is expected to be the first in the world to produce a liquid carbon negative biofuel on a large scale.
