Since its reveal at PlayStation Showcase 2021 last month, God of War Ragnarok, the sequel to 2018’s soft reboot, has caught the attention of fans and industry veterans alike. As the Nordic arc of Kratos’ story draws to a close, many rely on the sequel to answer several burning questions, many of which relate to Odin.

The theories about the king of the Aesir are as diverse as they are numerous, thanks in part to those of 2018 God of the war and her deliberately vague and disturbing foreshadowing of him. There are very few details known about the god, although Kratos and Atreus’ journey will inevitably take them on a collision course with him. Even Odin’s very appearance is a mystery, but one creative Reddit user gave him his best guess – and what a catchy guess it is.

Earlier this week, Reddit user Buffybumcheeks shared a bespoke image of what they imagine the main god might look like, even styling him after the revelations Sony showed new cast members like The God of War face the god Thor. The art is even complete with the name of Richard Schiff, the dubber advertised for the role.

There’s a lot of detail to dissect about this take on Odin, but it’s all worth looking into. The artist manages to perfectly mimic the designs Sony has shared while also including some of Odin’s best-known traits. Here, Odin is adorned with intricate golden furs and accessories fit for a king from a cold region like the Ancient Norse. Horns reminiscent of a Viking helmet as well as a horn at the waist are classic reminders of the culture from which its mythology originated.

Of particular interest are the mythological signatures Odin is known for, the tools Odin will likely need to deal with the end of the Norse Gods. The first is the weapon in his right hand, which one can reasonably assume to be Gungnir, the Spear of Fate, which Odin wields throughout his reign. The second is his eye, which Odin traded for acquaintances a long time ago. Additionally, there appears to be some form of rot or corruption around the eye, which really shows that this was a heavy price to pay from the Aesir.

Since God of War Ragnarok will be the end of the Norse Saga, Odin will likely turn out to be the final antagonist of this arc. Because of that, there is a lot of pressure for Odin to deliver a sufficiently imposing performance before Kratos’ journey takes him elsewhere. It all starts with a design that gives a good first impression, and if the final design that Sony goes with is even half as good as this one, then Odin is in good hands.

God of War Ragnarok is slated for release in 2022 on PS4 and PS5
