Gracheva and Gasanova advance to first Astana Women’s Open | National sports



NUR-SULTAN, Kazakhstan (AP) – Russian players Varvara Gracheva and Anastasia Gasanova have advanced from the first round of the inaugural Astana Women’s Open on Monday.

Seventh-seeded Gracheva defeated Kristyna Pliskova 6-3, 7-6 (5) and Gasanova defeated Yuliya Hatouka of Belarus 6-1, 6-1 in the hard court tournament.

Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko progressed when fellow Russian player Vitalia Diatchenko retired as Tsurenko led 6-1, 3-1.

Second seed Alison Van Uytvanck beat local Zhibek Kulambayeva 6-3, 6-4.

Serbian Aleksandra Krunic beat Briton Katie Boulter 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, and Germany’s Anna-Lena Friedsam also rallied to beat Australia’s Arina Rodionova 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Home favorite Yulia Putintseva is the seed and hopes to win her second touring title of the year. Putintseva will face Ekaterine Gorgodze in the first round on Tuesday.

Kazakhstan hosts the WTA tournament after Kwon Soon-woo won the men’s tournament on Sunday. Kwon became the first South Korean tennis player in 18 years to win a title on the men’s tour after beating James Duckworth 7-6 (6), 6-3 in the final.
