GREAT NEWS! New segments of the SH 99 Grand Parkway project are now open

The Grand Parkway / SH 99 from Eastex Freeway in New Caney to SH 146 in Baytown is open to traffic!

It was closed for most of the morning as several approvals needed to be obtained before crews would gradually open the highway. Officials told us the new stretch of roadway should be open to drivers before the end of the day. Once open, people can use it for free until tolls start at midnight on Saturday May 21.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Wednesday, May 18, but it was still considered a construction zone until the lanes opened on Thursday.

Work began on this section of the tollway in 2018, and area residents are excited to finally see it open, with comments on Facebook:

  • “…Woooo Hooooo the best news I’ve heard all day! I’m headed that way tomorrow, so hopefully that helps!” Wendy Foster

  • “I’m really excited! We often travel north to Hwy 59 and I45. It’ll cut our travel time for sure!” Karen Brown Johnson

This project spans Harris, Montgomery, Liberty and Chambers counties, marking the continued construction of this 184-mile loop of freeway around the Greater Houston area – which, by the way – makes it the largest freeway loop in the country!

Drive carefully my friends 🙂

Men and women are up all night constructing the barren new corridor connecting West Pier D (currently under construction) to the existing Terminal D and Bush Intercontinental Airport. Go with extra time if you fly out of Bush airport, construction might slow you down.
