Lenny Abrahamson is planning a new project based on his own background growing up

Oscar-nominated director Lenny Abrahamson hopes to write a semi-autobiographical show for his next project.

The Normal People director has revealed he is taking a break to start writing a new script as viewers enjoy the TV adaptation of Sally Rooney’s Conversations with Friends, which is currently airing on RTE every Wednesday night.

Lenny told the Irish Daily Star that his next project will be based on something “that relates to my own background”.

He told us, “I’m taking a break to do some writing. I plan to work on a story related to my own journey in a world that I know.

“Dublin from the late 1950s to the 1990s and 2000s.

“Whether it will be cinema or television, I don’t know yet.”

Lenny was born to Eastern European parents Edna and lawyer Max Abrahamson.

After earning an honors degree in physics and philosophy, he set his sights on the film industry.

In the 2000s he co-founded Trinity Video Company and his first film foray, 3 Joes, saw him receive numerous awards at numerous European film festivals. His big break as a director came in 2004 for the cult film Adam & Paul, a dark comic tragic tale of two Dublin heroin addicts.

His follow-up film, Garage, starring Pat Shortt, Anne-Marie Duff and Conor J. Ryan was released in 2007, winning four gongs at the 2008 Irish Film and Television Awards. In 2012, Abrahamson directed the award-winning film What Richard Did, which launched Jack Reynor’s acting career.

Lenny told us: “After doing Adam and Paul and Garage, that’s why I did ‘What Richard Did’. There isn’t one group of people who have stories and other groups who don’t. There are stories everywhere Adam and Paul rooted in Dublin but this Dublin is also real.

In 2015, he was nominated for an Oscar for his internationally acclaimed film adaptation of Emma Donoghue’s book Room, which saw lead actress Brie Larsson pick up the Best Actress gong.
