Additional protected bike lanes have been added to a street feeding the dangerous intersection of Florida and New York avenues to the northeast.
Additional protected bike lanes have been added to the final plans of the massive reconfiguration project of one of DC’s most complicated intersections.
On Tuesday morning, Wendy’s restaurant at the intersection of Florida and New York avenues in the northeast was boarded up, surrounded by a chain-link fence, the morning after the district Department of Transportation unveiled its final plans to improve traffic, bicycle and pedestrian safety at the intersection, which ranks among the most crash-prone in DC.
Highlights of the previously announced plan include restoring two-way traffic on Florida Avenue and First Street Northeast, as well as adding protected east-west bike lanes on Florida Avenue.
In a virtual briefing on Monday, Nick Farver, with the JMT project design team, said additional protected cycle paths have been added to the plan, to include a stretch of Eckington Place Northeast, which is a few yards down west of the intersection.
The aim is to make driving safer for people entering and exiting the Eckington area.
Currently, a painted bike path exists between Florida Avenue and R Street to the northeast.
Painted and easily overlooked lanes will be replaced with protected cycle lanes, adjacent to the sidewalk, with a three-foot buffer zone between cyclists and cars, Farver said.
The change in bicycle safety will result in the loss of 6 parking spaces – from the current 58 spaces to 52.
The demolition of the Wendy’s building will likely coincide with the construction of the new intersection, which will also include three public park spaces. Demolition and construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2022.
