In November, the City of Monroe will ask voters to consider a mile to fund construction of a police station adjoining the city’s new Central Fire Station which is only three years old.

Last Monday, the Monroe City Council unanimously approved ballot wording for a bond issue application to build the addition to the fire station at 911 E. Third St. According to the approved resolution by the board, the amount of the bond issue would be capped at $12.5 million and would be used “to pay for the cost of acquiring, constructing, furnishing and equipping a police station complementing the existing fire station located on E. Third Street creating a public safety facility, including all site improvements.”

The estimated mileage rate is 0.98 mils for the first year of drawdown and an average of 97 mils per year over the 21-year life of the bonds.

The city has been discussing the possibility of building a new police station for several years. Construction of the $6 million Central Fire Station was completed in the fall of 2019, with this facility taking priority over a new police station due to the poor condition of the former Central Fire Station at 75 Scott Street .

City officials say the new fire station building was built with the idea in mind that adding a police station could happen in the future. The city investigated the renovation of an existing building, looking at several locations across the city before finally deciding to ask voters to consider approving the construction of a brand new facility next to the fire station .

The city has leased its current police department space at 100 E. Second St. in Monroe County since the 1970s. The original lease expired more than 20 years ago, but the relationship has continued, the city renting the space for approximately $60,000 per year.

The administration and council have previously indicated that they are waiting to move forward on the police station project until the council determines how it wishes to manage the long-term future of the police service and city ​​fire. In the fall of 2021, the city officially consolidated the two entities under new director of public safety, Chad J. Tolstedt.

This paved the way for the city to begin serious analysis of the police station project.
