Product reviews in the lab can change the world by helping other scientists find the best equipment to speed up their vital work. Here at SelectScience®, we are committed to promoting peer-to-peer communication that will make a difference – but we couldn’t do it without our esteemed reviewers. In this regular article, we spotlight some of our most dedicated and influential reviewers and find out what inspires them to continue sharing their knowledge with the global scientific community.

This week’s “Reviewer in the Spotlight” is Dr Guy-Armel Bounda, Biomedical Advisor at Sinomedica and Researcher at China Pharmaceutical University. Her current research efforts are focused on understanding the various drivers of invasive breast cancer. In this article, Dr. Bunda explains how science communication is vital for the implementation of new ideas and discusses the importance of exams when researching laboratory equipment.

Tell me about your role and your ongoing research

I am a biomedical advisor and drug expert at Sinomedica, Nanjing, Jiangsu, China. However, the Clinical Pharmacy Department of China Pharmaceutical University is my research center. By training, I am a clinical pharmacist specializing in toxicology. My current research is to understand the different drivers of invasive breast cancer, in parallel to make significant contributions in terms of herbal medicine. Currently, I am writing two voluminous books: while the first will give us a deep understanding of the factors that lead to ductal carcinoma to become invasive species, the second will highlight the value of the clinical pharmacist in various specialty clinics.

What prompted you to enter the world of science?

Entering the world of science has always been a desire since high school. Seeing my biology teacher demonstrate how to observe cells just by swabbing the inside wall of our mouths amazed me. In addition, it was my mother’s clinical influence that made me decide to pursue a scientific career.

Laboratory equipment reviews are essential because they allow effective communication between scientists.

Why is communication vital in science?

In all areas of our life, effective communication remains vital. In science, to innovate or develop great concepts, we must be able to communicate ideas very clearly to the scientific community so that our ideas are well received and implemented.

Why do you think laboratory equipment reviews are important?

Laboratory equipment reviews are essential because they allow effective communication between scientists. As they come directly from the users, they convey the truth in terms of the characteristics of the equipment. They are a kind of pharmacovigilance for laboratory equipment. They are true, unbiased and reflect direct use of the equipment.

What is your favorite lab equipment?

The BD FACSLyric â„¢ Flow Cytometer System from BD Biosciences is beautiful laboratory equipment. Although a little expensive, it is very effective. I believe that the passion for science lab work is nurtured with the right equipment.

How do SelectScience journals help you in your research?

As a researcher and clinical scientist, I am always on the lookout for the latest information that can improve my knowledge or help solve problems regarding a project or topic that I am working on. As for the SelectScience reviews, I think they provide an incredible experience sharing from other peers in the field. These reviews help me understand what equipment to look for based on our expected results.

What would you like to achieve in your job?

There are so many things I would love to accomplish in my job. One of my goals is to contribute significantly to herbal medicine in the field of clinical oncology (breast and prostate cancer) as well as to research on diabetes mellitus. Although enormous work has been done in the field of pharmacognosy, the therapeutic value of natural components remains to be elucidated and this is another area of interest for me.
