Welcome sign of pandemic progress: Chenango cuts back on updates

A welcome sign of the times comes in the form of another Southern Tier County backing down on its regular updates regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earlier this year, Broome County Director Jason Garnar interrupted his weekly live press conferences regarding the coronavirus, with updates coming only from the county website. Tioga County has stopped daily notices on the Department of Health website, but still provides daily figures through the county government page, and Delaware County began providing updates only on Thursday. On June 29, Chenango County announced that it would start providing updates only on Tuesday, as infections and deaths continue to decline.

An example of this is evident in the latest figures. No additional deaths were reported in any of the counties in the southern part.

Broome County had a total of 18,147 cases for the pandemic as of the June 29 release. That’s an increase of just two. Chenango’s latest daily update shows the total number of infections at 3,512, an increase of one case. Cortland County has had no new cases with a pandemic total of 4,591. Delaware County’s last update on June 24 had total infections at 2,425 and 51 deaths. As of June 29, Tioga County reported no additional cases, standing at 3,908 since the pandemic began in mid-March last year.
